Athens, Greece – Greece has appealed to the United Nations (UN), claiming that Turkey poses a “threat to the security of the entire region” as the energy and efficiency struggle continues in the Eastern Mediterranean on the Greece-Turkey line.
In a 2-page letter, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Maria Theofili, described the presence of the Oruç Reis seismic research vessel in her country’s maritime area as “illegal,” Greek radio television quoted her as saying.
Turkey’s actions “cannot remain unanswered because they pose a threat to the security of the entire region,” Theofili said.
Noting Greece’s agreement with Egypt, the Greek diplomat argued that the agreement was being used by Turkey as a pretext to reject planned talks with Greece.
Theofili noted that the agreement with Egypt would give the opportunity to meet with “potentially interested neighbouring countries” in the future.
