Rome, Italy – Turkish ambassador to Rome Murat Salim Esenli stated that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan should seek peace rather than send his son to war, and that peace would be possible if Armenian forces withdrew from the occupied territory of Azerbaijan. “Pashinyan presents his country as a ‘victim’ to arouse sympathy at the international level,” Esenli said.

Turkey’s Ambassador to Rome, Murat Salim Esenli, sent a letter in response to a statement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan published in the Italian daily La Repubblica on October 9th.

The Italian newspaper quoted the following statements from Ambassador Esenli’s letter::

“The prime minister (Pashinyan) presents his country as a ‘victim’ in order to arouse sympathy at the international level. But 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under Armenian occupation since the 90s, as shown by United Nations Security Council Resolution 4, which demanded the immediate withdrawal of Armenian forces.

Azerbaijan is not fighting on Armenian soil, it is trying to protect its own land from the aggressor. Regional peace can only be reached by the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories. Turkey’s proposal to create a commission of inquiry for the events of 1915 is still valid. Instead of sending his son to the war front, the Armenian Prime Minister should seek peace. The Minsk Group, which includes Italy, should play a more active and effective role.”

On the other hand, La Repubblica newspaper published Esenli’s letter, which was significantly shortened.

Contained in the original text of the letter; “Pashinyan methods resorted to in order to cover up the guilt that ignores moral values”, “(Pashinyan) when transferring events to dangerously ‘selective memory'”, in “recent developments on July 12, the Armenian Armed Forces began in Tovuz frequent ceasefire violations along the line of contact and Armenian it was the culmination of ongoing provocation”, “the events of 1915, the legally accepted definition is promoting like there’s”, “do not hesitate to provoke religious sensibilities”, “Armenia, “The international community must put pressure on Armenia to go to outcome-oriented negotiations in good faith, “the Italian newspaper said, ignoring UN Security Council and OSCE resolutions and continuing to mock international law to maintain the status quo and strengthen its occupation.
