Tripoli, Libya – At least 74 refugees have drowned as a result of a malfunction on a ship carrying refugees on their way to Europe off Libya.

At least 74 refugees have drowned after a ship carrying refugees sank off Libya after breaking down, the United Nations (UN) Refugee Agency said in a statement. There were 120 people on board, including women and children.

The Libyan Coast Guard and civilian fishermen reportedly rescued 31 people. According to data shared by the UN, more than 20 thousand refugees who have tried to go to Europe since 2004 have died in the Mediterranean Sea.
