Ankara, Turkey – CHP (Republican People’s Party) reacted to the fact that Oruç Reis ‘mission in the Eastern Mediterranean was not extended and considered the return of the ship’ a compromise’

CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu convened an extraordinary meeting of his party’s Central Administration Board yesterday after the Oruç Reis ship, which was in the Eastern Mediterranean for Seismic Research, returned to Antalya.

At the meeting, which started at 18.00 at the headquarters, Unal Cevikoz, the chief consultant for foreign policy, made a presentation. In a statement after the CAB meeting, “the anchoring of the Oruç Reis seismic research ship off the coast of Antalya is considered a ‘compromise’. We call on the government not to make concessions in our justifiable cases,” he said.

“The foreign policy, which should be a ‘state policy’, has been primarily materialized into domestic policy, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its bureaucracy have been disabled and managed by the decisions taken by a single person. In addition, the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and the Greek Cypriot Administration on the establishment of a ‘Cyprus Center for Land, Offshore and Port Security’ and the statements of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo against Turkey were met with great concern. Pompeo’s signing of a memorandum with the Greek Cypriot Administration will further increase tensions in the region, making it more difficult to resolve the Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean issue peacefully. This memorandum, which ignores the rights of the TRNC, also contradicts the London and Zurich agreements of 1960. Pompeo’s departure during his visit to the island without meeting with TRNC officials is a disrespect to the Turkish presence on the island. We regret that no statement has been made by the competent institutions of our country regarding this agreement.”
